How We Review Tools

How We Review Tools

Every review and comparison on BookkeeperTools follows a consistent process designed to give UK bookkeepers, sole traders, and small practice owners the information they actually need to make a decision.

Our Review Process

1. Research

Before writing a single word, we research each tool thoroughly. This includes:

  • Reviewing the vendor's current feature set and documentation
  • Verifying UK pricing in GBP (not estimated conversions from USD)
  • Checking MTD compatibility and HMRC approval status where relevant
  • Reading user reviews from UK-based bookkeepers and accountants
  • Examining integration capabilities with popular UK accounting platforms

2. UK Focus

This site is written specifically for UK users. That means:

  • All pricing is in pounds sterling
  • VAT handling and MTD compliance are always addressed
  • We consider UK-specific features (bank feeds with UK banks, Companies House integration, HMRC submissions)
  • Comparisons reflect the UK market — not the US or global market

3. Practical Assessment

We evaluate every tool against criteria that matter to real users:

  • Accuracy — Does it actually do what it claims? How reliable is the AI?
  • Value for money — Is the pricing fair for what UK small businesses get?
  • Ease of use — Can a non-accountant set it up and use it without training?
  • Integration — Does it work with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, and other UK platforms?
  • Support — Is help available in UK hours? Is documentation clear?
  • Compliance — Does it support MTD and UK regulatory requirements?

4. Honest Verdicts

Every review includes a clear verdict: who the tool is best for, who should look elsewhere, and whether it's worth the money. We include drawbacks and limitations alongside the strengths — if something isn't great, we say so.

How We Handle Comparisons

Our comparison articles pit tools against each other on specific criteria that matter for the decision. We use structured breakdowns covering pricing, features, integrations, and ideal user profiles so you can quickly see which option fits your situation.

Corrections and Updates

Software changes. Prices change. Features get added or removed. We review and update our articles regularly to keep them accurate. If you spot something that's out of date, please let us know at james@bookkeepertools.uk and we'll correct it promptly.

Editorial Independence

Our content is editorially independent. Affiliate relationships do not influence our reviews, ratings, or recommendations. We cover tools based on their relevance to UK bookkeepers, not based on commercial arrangements. For full details, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
